A website is broken

A page that will not load, a video that will not start, a button that does nothing. A short pause tells you whether AdFender is involved, and if it is, one more step lets that site work while the rest of the web stays filtered.

First: is it AdFender at all?

Right-click the AdFender icon in the system tray, near the clock, choose Disable filtering, and pick a duration — 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes or Until I resume. Then reload the page.

  • Still broken with filtering off? It is almost certainly not AdFender. Try the page in a different browser, or with your browser extensions disabled.
  • Works with filtering off? AdFender is very likely involved. Fix that one site below and leave the rest of the web filtered.

Pick a timed pause if you can: filtering comes back on by itself, so you cannot leave your PC unprotected by forgetting about it. Until I resume stays paused until you turn filtering back on. You can also pause from the dashboard, which offers its own set of durations and lets you pause one app rather than everything.

Then: turn filtering off for that site only

Right-click the tray icon again and choose Exempt website from filtering…. AdFender opens a box that asks for the address:

  1. Paste the address. Copy it from your browser’s address bar. AdFender tidies it up for you — you do not need to trim it.
  2. Choose how much to exempt. Entire website is the right answer nearly always. Specific page only is for a large site where a single page misbehaves and you want the rest still filtered.
  3. Confirm. AdFender shows you in plain words what it is about to do, then applies it immediately.
What you are trading

An exempted site is no longer filtered, so its ads and trackers may come back. That is the point — it is what makes the page work — but it is worth exempting the page rather than the whole site when the choice is real.

Undoing it later

Every exemption is an ordinary line in your own rules, and you can read and delete them: open Filters, then My filter rules. Remove the line for the site and save. Nothing is hidden from you and nothing is stored anywhere but your PC.

If exempting the site did not fix it

Then the breakage is probably not caused by blocking. A few sites do not tolerate having their secure connection inspected at all — typically banking, brokerage and other sites that pin their own certificates. Those need to be excluded from HTTPS filtering rather than exempted from blocking.

On the dashboard, open HTTPS filtering and then Manage exclusion list. Sites on that list pass through without AdFender decrypting them. AdFender ships with the common financial and sensitive-transaction sites already listed, and you can add your own as a hostname or a wildcard such as *.example.com.

More on what that inspection is and why AdFender does it: HTTPS filtering and the certificate.

Tell us about it

An exemption fixes it for you. Telling us helps us fix the rule for everyone — a filter rule that breaks a real site is a bug in the list, and we can work to get it corrected. Send us the address, and say what was broken.
